For runners, recovery is not simply about waiting until the soreness disappears.
The body needs time to restore muscle function, manage exercise-related fatigue, and prepare for the next training session. This has led to growing interest in recovery technologies such as intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC), commonly known as compression boots.
These systems use inflatable chambers that sequentially compress the legs and then release the pressure.
But one question comes up frequently:
Should you use compression boots before or after running?
The answer depends on what you are trying to accomplish.
For most runners using compression boots specifically for recovery, after the run is the more logical application.
Running places repeated mechanical and metabolic demands on the lower limbs.
Depending on distance, pace, terrain, and training status, the muscles experience:
Repeated contractions
Temporary fatigue
Mechanical stress
Reduced muscle performance
Exercise-related inflammation
Fluid shifts within tissues
After a particularly demanding session, these effects can persist for hours or days.
Recovery strategies are designed to help the body return toward its normal state while allowing the adaptations created by training to occur.
After a run, the objective is no longer to prepare the muscles for immediate performance. It is to support recovery.
Intermittent pneumatic compression applies sequential pressure to the limbs, producing temporary changes in blood-flow dynamics.
A 2024 randomized crossover study involving soccer and track-and-field athletes found that IPC increased blood-flow velocity during treatment, particularly at higher pressure settings. The researchers also noted that these effects were transient, with measurements returning close to baseline shortly after treatment.
This provides a physiological basis for using compression after exercise, although increased blood flow alone does not prove faster overall recovery.
The evidence is promising—but not definitive.
A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis examining 17 studies involving 319 participants found that lower-limb IPC produced small effects on muscular function and small-to-moderate effects on pain and soreness, while effects on markers of muscle damage were highly variable.
The researchers identified protocols of approximately 20–30 minutes and around 80 mmHg as commonly studied approaches, although this does not establish one universally optimal setting for every person or device.
A 2025 randomized trial also found that IPC may reduce perceived soreness after strenuous exercise, although it did not significantly improve several objective measures of neuromuscular recovery.
This distinction is important.
Feeling better and recovering measurable muscle function are related, but they are not the same outcome.
Pre-run compression is a different question.
Some runners use compression because their legs feel heavy or stiff before training. In that situation, the purpose is not necessarily to accelerate recovery from the upcoming run.
Instead, the goal may be to:
Improve perceived leg comfort
Temporarily alter blood-flow dynamics
Reduce the sensation of heaviness
Help the individual feel more prepared to move
There is currently much less evidence that a short compression-boot session immediately before running improves running performance.
In fact, research on compression garments during running has not demonstrated consistent improvements in physiological or performance outcomes. A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis found that wearing compression socks during running did not significantly change running performance or several physiological and perceptual outcomes.
Compression boots and compression socks are not identical interventions, so these findings should not be directly transferred from one to the other. However, they reinforce the need to avoid assuming that more compression automatically means better performance.

The most evidence-supported reason to use compression boots around running is therefore recovery rather than performance enhancement.
Long runs create substantially greater recovery demands than an easy training session.
Following a long run, compression may be useful as one component of a broader recovery routine.
For example:
After the run
Cool down with easy movement.
Rehydrate appropriately.
Eat a balanced recovery meal.
Allow the body to settle.
Use compression if it is comfortable and appropriate.
Prioritize sleep.
The objective is not to replace these fundamentals with technology.
Compression should complement them.
Compression may be particularly interesting when runners have limited recovery time between sessions.
Examples include:
Marathon training
Multi-day races
Tournament schedules
High-volume training blocks
Two-a-day training
Running combined with strength training
A 2025 meta-analysis of 27 studies found that compression garments produced statistically significant, although relatively modest, improvements in recovery of muscle strength and power following exercise-induced fatigue.
This suggests compression may have a role when the priority is maintaining function between demanding sessions, although the magnitude of benefit varies.
It is easy to overestimate what recovery technology can accomplish.
Compression boots cannot compensate for:
Insufficient sleep
Excessive training volume
Inadequate nutrition
Dehydration
Poor training progression
Untreated injury
If a runner repeatedly requires recovery technology simply to tolerate their normal training schedule, the more important question may be whether the training load itself needs adjustment.
Recovery technology should support a well-designed training program—not disguise an unsustainable one.
Not every case of tired or heavy legs is caused by exercise.
Persistent symptoms may have other causes, including vascular, neurological, musculoskeletal, medication-related, or systemic factors.
Medical evaluation is particularly important when symptoms are:
New and unexplained
Persistent or worsening
Limited primarily to one leg
Accompanied by significant swelling
Associated with warmth, redness, or unusual pain
Associated with weakness or numbness
Compression should not be used as a substitute for evaluating unexplained symptoms.
The goal is recovery rather than performance.
Your legs feel fatigued after a demanding session.
You experience exercise-related soreness.
You have another training session approaching.
You find compression comfortable and beneficial as part of your recovery routine.
You are using it primarily for comfort or perceived readiness.
You already know that it makes your legs feel better.
You are not relying on it to increase running performance.
There is currently not enough evidence to claim that compression boots before every run improve performance.
The ideal recovery strategy depends on the runner.
An experienced marathon runner completing high weekly mileage may have very different recovery requirements from someone running three times per week.
Training volume, intensity, age, sleep, nutrition, injury history, and overall health all influence recovery.
Compression boots can be one tool within that system—but they should not become the system itself.
After running is generally the more evidence-aligned time to use compression boots when the goal is recovery.
Research suggests intermittent pneumatic compression may provide small benefits for perceived soreness and some aspects of recovery, but results are not uniform.
Evidence that compression boots improve running performance when used beforehand is limited.
Compression may be particularly useful during demanding training periods when recovery time between sessions is short.
Sleep, nutrition, hydration, appropriate training loads, and active recovery remain the foundation of running recovery.
The better question is:
"What am I trying to achieve with compression?"
If the goal is to feel more comfortable before a run, pre-run use may have a place. If the goal is to support recovery from the workload you have already completed, post-run use is the more logical choice.
Compression boots are not a shortcut around recovery. They are one potential tool within a larger strategy designed to help runners manage training demands, recover appropriately, and keep moving consistently.
